About Tanya

Who is Tanya?

A great question, with lots of answers.

I am a nutrition professional, working on my supervised hours in order to obtain my CNS (Certified Nutrition Specialist) board certification.  I hold an MS Clinical Nutrition and Integrative Health from Maryland University of Integrative Health as well as a BA in Liberal Arts from Alfred University.

My practice is virtual for now, but I am based in Maryland, where I have spent the majority of the last 20 years.

Achieving and maintaining health through nutrition is one of my passions.  It may sound odd, but my other passion, sailing, led me to it.

My life on the Water

My first career

Fun fact, my first career was (and still is) as a Captain on educational sail training (mostly) vessels.  I hold a USCG 200 ton Near Coastal Masters license, AB Sail and AB Seaman and have been a Wilderness First Responder – all for more than 20 years.  In my life on the water, I have sailed the eastern seaboard (from Maine to Florida), the Carribean and Gulf of Mexico, with a large chunk of time spent on the Chesapeake Bay.

Many of these boats, especially in recent years, have a had a huge focus on creating a connection for students (of all ages) to both the water and the environment; but also to help bring understanding to the issues of climate change and human impact on the natural environment.

Our health is impacted not just by what we eat, but also by how what we eat is grown; and how it is grown has a major impact on the well-being of our environment and world.

Full circle

How it’s all related

As is the case for many of us, my career on the water, although fulfilling, was demanding.  After many years, I found myself exhausted and feeling it – both mentally and physically.  Being diagnosed with Crohn’s disease was the beginning of my journey towards balance and my pursuit of healing through nutrition.

Since then, I have experienced how a wide variety of nutrition related factors (macro and micronutrient imbalances, dysbiosis, neurotransmitter imbalances, etc.), lifestyle factors (stress, poor sleep, inappropriate exercise, work/life balance) and environmental factors (chemicals/pesticides in food, additives, environmental toxins) can impact nearly every aspect of our health.  I’ve had specific experience with nutrition and medical nutrition therapy as it relates to IBD, candida, fertility, depression/anxiety, histamine intolerance, asthma/allergies, osteoperosis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and macular degeneration.

So how can I use all this to help you?

The biggest lesson I’ve learned, is that, for most of us, it doesn’t take much to see some big changes.

I believe in creating health by taking sustainable and realistic steps; by using regenerative, whole foods nutrition and high quality nutrients; by creating balance in life; by learning about our bodies and our world.
